Three Emmy Laughs
A few days have passed since the Emmys. It was a good awards show, briskly paced, funny at times, with many expected wins and a few surprises (apparently this was the year when it was decided that Kyra Sedgwick should have an Emmy already). I am particularly happy to see Modern Family score big wins; congratulations to Eric Stonestreet and the showrunners. Breaking Bad didn’t win Outstanding Drama Series, but it was heartwarming to see Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul salute each other on their Emmys. There were three moments during the awards telecast that put a wide grin on my face:
The opening act was absolutely terrific, the Glee version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”, featuring Jimmy Fallon, Betty White, Tina Fey, Jon Hamm and cast members of Glee. Very engaging stuff….

Field of Dreams: Ease Your Pain
One of the very best movies about baseball made a heartfelt case to have the legendary “Shoeless” Joe Jackson inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It still hasn’t happened though; Jackson remains banned, along with seven other White Sox players, for having cooperated with people who fixed the World Series in 1919. It’s the greatest scandal…

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear
Eternal student Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) finally seeks a job as a librarian, little dreaming that it’s a position he was destined to fill, one that will throw him into wondrous adventures. Yet another film inspired by the Indiana Jones movies, this one produced by Dean Devlin who apparently enjoyed the idea of elevating the status of librarians. Bet you didn’t know they’re guardians…

The Pool Boys
College kid Alex (Brett Davern) goes to see his cousin Roger (Matthew Lillard) in Los Angeles, who works as a pool boy; together, they hatch a scheme to make money. A direct-to-DVD release from the man who brought you American Pie 2 (2001); this one goes along the same lines. Its primary inspiration though is obviously Risky Business (1983), but the movie…

Glenn Beck Building Bridges? Please
Among right-wing pundits, no one has reached further than Glenn Beck. Rush Limbaugh may gather huge audiences for his radio show, but Beck has the power to summon fans to giant rallies and dominate the media in a more relevant way than Limbaugh, who remains primarily a divisive figure. So is Beck, no doubt about it, but he has some kind of freakish staying power that can’t be completely ignored. On his TV show, Beck usually acts like a non-partisan figure who simply wants to take the country back to its roots. Conservatives buy it wholesale…
