In Defense of CSI: Miami
Yesterday I wrote about Robin Williams still being a king of comedy (at least five years ago when he made that HBO special). Well, let’s not forget Jim Carrey. A few months ago, he was a guest on Letterman’s show and this clip is from that occasion. In it, Carrey talks about CSI: Miami and how he has fallen in love with David Caruso’s performance. It’s hilarious. I found the clip on a Swedish blog and I was surprised to see how this blogger has completely missed the point of the show. CSI: Miami is not to be taken too seriously. In fact, none of the CSI installations are. First of all, crime scene investigators don’t take part in solving crimes the way these characters do; that’s up to the detectives. The technology available to the investigators isn’t to the real-life counterparts; they should be lucky if these computers can be found in a few major cities in the country. The CSI shows are pure entertainment and the fact that Jerry Bruckheimer produced them says something.
CSI: Miami is the wildest of the three shows, and the most popular internationally. The sun-drenched Miami locations are probably one reason, but the show has also always had more action than the others. Credibility has no place here. The cinematography is always manipulated in computers where the colors are made impossibly intense, the female parts are all played by gorgeous women, the crime lab is all glass and empty spaces (it looks like a fancy airport), the villains are uncomplicated and thoroughly evil (the show has been called the most Republican of the three) and David Caruso refuses to play a real human being. He’s a personality, a character on a TV show who knows what he is. Jim Carrey’s impersonation of him is dead right. But that doesn’t mean that one can’t appreciate CSI: Miami. The stories are usually reasonably well written and it’s obvious that everyone’s having a good time (although the show is definitely inferior to the original). And Caruso is cool as ice.
