U2 and the Democratic Party

If you’re an American politician running for president, you need a good campaign song. I remember when Hillary Clinton left it to her voters to decide which campaign song should be hers and they chose some lame Celine Dion song. No, leave it to the experts, I say, and the experts tend to favor – U2. I’ve seen Barack Obama enter the stage to the tune of “Beautiful Day” (yes, shades of John Kerry in 2004) and I’ve heard “City of Blinding Lights”. Politicians love U2 and Bono loves to schmooze with politicians who support his causes. The songs certainly do the job.

Last night I was watching John Edwards deliver a speech in New Orleans, announcing that he was getting out of the race. It was a good speech and it ended with (what else) U2 and “Walk On”. It was quite emotional, a worthy Democratic warrior getting out of a race he was unable to win.

The clip above is from the last CNN debate where Senator Edwards finally gets a chance to show why he’s been a compelling figure in two presidential races (and a good trial lawyer). He’s truly making Obama and Clinton look like two squabbling children. Will he be a Vice Presidential candidate again? He’s very good. It’s possible, because he did a great job in 2004 (not least in a debate with Dick Cheney)… but on the other hand, he’s already done that once.

The second video is pure entertainment. A very talented person (I don’t know whom) has made President George W. Bush look like he’s performing “Sunday Bloody Sunday” during a State of the Union address. U2 is very much alive.
