Why Women Love Sex and the City and Men Love Boston Legal
Here’s a clue: it’s all about friendship. Men may be from Mars and women from Venus, but we all share the same desire. We need friendships to survive in this life and that’s what both these shows are about. Today I was listening to a rather silly debate on the radio about why Sex and the City is a hit. Some academic egghead delivered a advanced theory about consumerism and feminism, but it’s much simpler than that – women love that show and the movie because of the warm portrayal of these four women who share everything in life, even if they decide to go off and get married for a while, or have a kid. It’s not about the shoes or the clothes, it’s about bonds between friends that last. Another person commenting on the show made the point that these women are proving that families look different wherever you look, which is true.
Boston Legal is the male equivalent. Going into its fifth and apparently, sadly, last season this fall, the show has the same attitude as Sex and the City, portraying two men who share everything and are not shy about their devoted friendship. Every episode is finished on a balcony where they smoke a cigar and have a shot of whiskey; on Sex and the City the women usually round up the episodes in a bar with a Cosmo, discussing what they’ve learned. But why isn’t Boston Legal as popular as Sex and the City? Easy. Men are not as much in touch with their inner feelings as women are.
These two shows lead the fight against perceived notions that the only way one can find happiness is to marry someone, have kids and move to suburbia. The YouTube clip was put together by user aaronvogt51 who is apparently just as touched by the friendship theme of Boston Legal as I am.

Yeah, I agree. All people, regardless of the sex, value friendship that much. The only difference is the way we show it and the way we handle our feelings. It is the women that are too emotional while the men seem to be untouched. But the bottom line there is that men and women do have the friendship value in their own way.
