Boston Legal: A Final Cigar On the Balcony
The final episode of Boston Legal has aired and it is time to sum things up. My review of the show will be published within a few days and I feel terribly sad about having reached this moment. At first I thought David E. Kelley’s show would get a full fifth season, but 13 episodes is what they ended up with. Let’s take a look at some of the most memorable moments:
Jerry performs the theme – Boston Legal always had a postmodern streak and this clip is a perfect example. It shows Jerry (Christian Clemenson) trying to talk Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) into rehiring him since Crane, Poole & Schmidt is such a cool place to work for. Jerry tells Shirley that the idea of coming back to the firm has him humming a tune and when Shirley asks him to hum it for her, his performance melds into the main title sequence.
Denny and Alan declare their love for each other – I love this compilation from YouTube user aaronvogt51, showing some of Alan and Denny’s best moments together to the tune of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes”, highlighting that emotional scene when the guys make it clear to each other that their friendship means more than the occasional cigar and whiskey.
Alan Shore’s speeches – Alan used each and every one of his closing arguments as an opportunity to preach his political views. Annoying to his opponents, mesmerizing to the rest of us. In this clip, he attacks scientology.
Another compilation clip – Well, some of them are well produced. This one has scenes from season one to five, so why not? Thanks to YouTube user Vesp9192.
Denny Crane shoots a mugger – In the fifth season, Denny and Jerry are mugged, but Denny quickly disarms the criminal – and manages to turn the whole affair into an election issue.
Alan and Denny dance on the balcony – In the final episode our heroes actually get married and end the show dancing on their famed balcony. Watching this scene I felt a tremendous sense of emptiness… but I guess life goes on for me and Alan and Denny as well.
William Shatner talks about Boston Legal on Jimmy Kimmel – In this clip, Shatner is a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he talks about what the show meant to him. It is quite obvious what kind of role this show has played in the lives of those involved.
I’ll end this clip by saying thank you to the cast and crew of Boston Legal. It’s been four and a half beautiful years.
