A Truly Golden Girl Is Dead
Actress Beatrice Arthur died today at the age of 86 after battling cancer for some time. She’s the second Golden Girls cast member to die in a year; Estelle Getty left us last July. Dorothy in Arthur’s shape was my favorite on the show; always sharp and witty, with a gravel voice that could compete with Lionel Stander’s (just take a look at the clip above where she does Cher to Getty’s Sonny Bono in a rendition of “I Got You”).
Of course, Arthur had a rich career in television prior to The Golden Girls, not least on the classic Maude that ran for six years in the 1970s. She won two Emmys, one for that show, one for The Golden Girls.
The clip below is a spoof of Sex and the City, with Arthur as Carrie Bradshaw. Pretty amusing stuff; Abe Vigoda shows up as Mr. Big. Rest in peace, Ms. Arthur.
