Dom DeLuise's French Mistake
Actor Dom DeLuise died today at the age of 75. To me he’s the fat guy who used to hang with Burt Reynolds and provided some laughs in Mel Brooks movies. There was more to him than that, but his career was indeed dominated by supporting performances in comedies and one of his funniest was in the clip above, as a director showing his gay dancers how to do “the French Mistake” in Blazing Saddles (1974).
His friendship with Reynolds lasted for decades. When the Smokey and the Bandit star heard of DeLuise’s death, he issued a statement saying, “I was thinking the other day about this. As you get older you think about this more and more, I was dreading this moment. Dom always made everyone feel better when he was around. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone.” The following clip is outtakes from one of their films together, The Cannonball Run (1981); DeLuise keeps cracking up and Burt slapping him doesn’t seem to help:
