Six Trailers Worth Checking Out

Five Minutes of Heaven – Liam Neeson stars in this Northern Ireland drama, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, who last made the disappointing The Invasion (2007). But he also made Downfall (2004), so this film should be up his alley. The trailer looks like something Jim Sheridan put together, which is a good thing. U.S. release date: August (but it was shown at the Sundance festival earlier this year).

Daybreakers – A vampire story from The Spierig Brothers, who last made an Australian zombie movie. The trailer looks exciting enough, using Placebo’s “Running Up That Hill” to great effect. The cast has Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. I don’t really believe in the project, but I hope I’m wrong. U.S. release date: January 8, 2010.

The Informant! – Steven Soderbergh’s new movie is reality-based, telling the story of Mark Whitacre, a whistle-blower. The trailer makes him look like an idiot (it is basically a comedy), which I’m sure is not the full truth. Expect a very good performance by Matt Damon. U.S. release date: October 9.

Couples Retreat – Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn co-wrote this story about four couples going on a retreat. They both make appearances in the film, along with Jason Bateman, Malin Åkerman, Jean Reno and Kristin Davis. The trailer certainly looks funny enough; this is in the same vein as The Heartbreak Kid and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. U.S. release date: October 9.

The Last Airbender – M. Night Shyamalan chooses a different path, which is good. This is an adaptation of the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender and the trailer is only a teaser, but for someone like me who hasn’t watched the show it looks intriguing enough. I’m always rooting for Night to find his mojo again. U.S. release date: July 2, 2010.

2012 – Roland Emmerich delivers yet another disaster movie, this time inspired by the Mayan calendar and its prediction that something cataclysmic will happen in 2012. Judging from this trailer, the event will have Hollywood proportions. Expect things to be destroyed by tidal waves, earthquakes and the usual CGI stuff. The visual effects dominate the trailer and they look great. Do I believe in the film? No. Wait for the DVD… the only problem, of course, is the fact that movies like this should be enjoyed in a theater regardless of its dramatic quality. U.S. release date: November 13.
