A Hearty Welcome Back to V and 24

We have recently had the opportunity to watch two clips from the first season of the rebooted V and the eighth season of 24. Both look quite promising. Of course, the clip from the latter is actually a TV spot (watch it above) that Fox has put together. Starting January 17, the new season has Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) enjoying life as a grandfather, but his retirement is abruptly canceled when he learns that a political assassination is about to take place. The spot certainly looks like solid, explosive (although hardly original) entertainment. Elisha Cuthbert, Cherry Jones (who won an Emmy last September for this show) and Mary Lynn Rajskub will return in their roles. Also joining the cast will be Mykelti Williamson, Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Stephen Root, among others.

The new V premieres on November 3 and ABC released the first eight minutes of the pilot a while ago. Introducing the major characters at the moment when the huge alien ships arrive and create havoc, this clip has impressive visual effects (so did the original at the time and that was the least we could expect from the remake), but it’s impossible really to say much more. We see too little of the characters to decide whether or not we feel like following their plight, but I’m sure they all have potential. The clip whets the appetite and the concept has undoubtedly been given a fair chance. Kenneth Johnson is back on board after abandoning the original show due to creative differences. The beautiful thing about this reboot is the obvious opportunity to create a much deeper and ambitious science fiction saga than the original ever turned into. The old show became a third-rate version of Dynasty, and one thing is for sure. The worst-case scenario is that the new V will be a creative disappointment, even dull… but it won’t deteriorate as badly as the 1984-1985 weekly show did.
