Christmas With the Muppets

The Muppets are back in full force, which has been obvious since The Muppets Studio released their ambitious parody of the old Queen video for “Bohemian Rhapsody” on November 25. A few days ago they reminded us that ‘tis the season to be jolly by doing “Ringing of the Bells”. Animal gets to do his thing of course, but Beaker delivers a hysterical performance that fits the song very nicely.

Several showbiz writers have pointed out that it seems like the felt creatures we all love are headed back for a revival. Last year saw a TV special called A Muppets Christmas and apparently Jason Segel is somehow involved in a new project with Kermit and the other stars; maybe it’s the much-anticipated film about Jim Henson, the creator, that was recently listed as one of Hollywood’s hottest scripts waiting to be produced. I can’t wait. Like so many others in my age, I grew up with the Muppets and they’ve always been around in one shape or another. There were several movies, most of them quite entertaining. When they last had their comeback in 1996 with a new TV show called Muppets Tonight, it wasn’t a huge hit but it did have plenty of moments and ingredients that reminded fans of the good old days; the guest stars certainly looked like they had fun.

A few years ago I bought the first season of the original Muppets series on DVD. Very uneven, those episodes stand as evidence that Kermit and his vaudeville cast needed at least one season to grow into their roles and find the right tone. 30 odd years later, they know what they’re doing and keep making Jim Henson crack a smile every day up on his cloud.
