The Mad Men Goof Off

This clip is adorable. In the third season of Mad Men, Sterling Cooper wanted to use the final scene from the 1963 movie Bye Bye Birdie (where Ann Margret sings the title song) for a diet Pepsi ad. At the end of shooting the season, the cast and crew of the show gathered for a spoof of Ann Margret’s performance. The clip is a funny gift for the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner. You can watch and compare with the original below.

What is particularly amusing about this is that the clip is such a departure from the somber tone of the show – I love watching January Jones and Jon Hamm goof off, especially considering where their characters’ marriage was heading in the final episodes of the season. Perhaps all these people were simply excited about the prospects that presented themselves in the season finale as the key figures of Sterling Cooper prepared to embark on a new adventure?
