The Slut Is Dead, Long Live the Slut
The title of this blog post is borrowed from an episode of The Golden Girls where Dorothy (Bea Arthur) is shocked to learn how many boyfriends the not-so-innocent Rose (Betty White) had in high school, compared to the ever so slutty Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and declares the above. The term slut was used on the show with some affection. Blanche was a predecessor to Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall’s character on Sex and the City, a middle-aged woman with a large sexual appetite who refused to apologize for it. Originally, McClanahan was supposed to play the part of dim-witted Rose. Thank God she ended up with Blanche. The clip above shows some of her memorable turns on the show.
Rue McClanahan passed away earlier today at the age of 76, the third cast member of the show to leave us in the past two years. She will be missed.
