As the Geriatric World Turns
As the World Turns ends this year after 56 years on the air. That’s absolutely phenomenal… but also a sign of the times since Guiding Light, the oldest soap at the time of its demise, was canceled last year. The 37th Daytime Emmys took place on CBS last Sunday, an event that is far from standing shoulder to shoulder with other awards shows of the year. It can’t even measure up to the Tonys, another show that’s far from the talk of the town. Still, this was the place for As the World Turns to say goodbye to its audience, as the show won three Emmys for its cast, including one for Michael Parks who had played the same character for 13 years (watch the clip above).
The Daytime Emmys is a mixture of embarrassment and virtues. According to The Hollywood Reporter the opening was a bit of a disaster with David Copperfield and Regis Philbin screwing up… or rather the technicians failing to make it work. But there was also a tribute to Dick Clark and his American Bandstand where Simon Cowell explained to a younger audience that there would be no American Idol without Clark’s classic program.
Still, it’s kind of typical of this tepid show having to rely on primetime entertainment to attract viewers. It’s about time for the real Emmy nominations now, right?
