Sheen's Threat: My Last Time as Blair

In this interview on ITN, Michael Sheen says his third stab at portraying former Prime Minister Tony Blair is “hopefully” his last. I hope not. Perhaps he’s just being shy about the fact that his performances in The Deal, The Queen and The Special Relationship have been very special indeed. As I posted my review of the latest instalment in Peter Morgan’s chronicle of the Blair premiership, I stumbled upon a comment on the film’s IMDb page that complained about Morgan’s rosy depiction of Blair. First of all, it’s hardly that positive, especially not The Deal.

But the person who wrote the comment has a point. Morgan should write a fourth part, one that delves deeper into the game between Blair and George W. Bush that led to the Iraq War. Both The Queen and The Special Relationship hinted at the looming disaster that was this war. It is time for Morgan to move on to another chapter and portray the most difficult period in Blair’s era at 10 Downing Street. That could be Sheen’s greatest challenge yet.
