Pour Some Sugar on Conan
These must be trying days for Conan O’Brien. Not that he’s in danger of anything; after all he got a very pleasant compensation package for leaving NBC. But it can’t be easy to once again, only a year after taking charge of The Tonight Show, find himself in the position of trying to sell an audience something new. On November 8th, O’Brien will return to late-night television with Conan, a new talkshow. The arena, cable network TBS, is new for him. A smaller audience will be watching him, but the numbers are not easily analyzed and comparisons with Jay Leno and David Letterman will have to be made with certain caveats; for instance, the age of the audience will likely matter more to TBS than NBC and CBS.
O’Brien will not be joined by Max Weinberg, but most of his band. Perhaps that will be a comfort zone to him. The ads above show him in good shape, especially the hilarious ’80s-style desk-washing bit set to the tunes of Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me”.
