Peter Yates 1928-2011

I remember watching An Innocent Man (1989) at a young age, thinking it was pretty brilliant. I haven’t seen the Tom Selleck starrer since then, but I imagine that I think less of it today. But it says something about its director, Peter Yates, that I found it so exciting. Yates was a pro whose material may not always have been first-class but he knew how to make it work. And he certainly made a few classics, such as Breaking Away (1979) and The Dresser (1983). But the British filmmaker will always be remembered for Bullitt (1968), a thriller whose central car-chase scene has become an example to follow for editors all over the world.

Yates, who died yesterday in London at the age of 82, cut his teeth in television and ended his career back in that medium. His achievements were varied, with two Oscar nominations for Best Director. Rest in peace.
