Building a Dynasty? Not Likely

I can’t help being fascinated by the news of a Dynasty revival. Unlike Dallas, which looks set to get a TNT reboot, complete with Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy, Dynasty creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are hoping to turn their 1980s supersoap into a movie franchise. According to an interview with the couple on MovieWeb, the idea is to trace the roots of the characters, portraying them “in the Mad Men era of the 1960s”. As Richard says, “we were always constrained by the smaller budget of a TV series, and all the standards and practices that governed the content of the show. In the movie, if we want to have some James Bond style action, we can afford to do that.”

Wow. I bet the Shapiros imagine Jon Hamm as a young Blake Carrington. This interview actually makes them look like the married-couple version of Norma Desmond, still living in the past, plotting their grand comeback. It’s one thing to imagine a TV comeback for the Carringtons in the vein of the new Dallas, although even that would be a hard sell, especially now that John Forsythe is dead and Joan Collins is turning 78 this year. But a movie franchise set in the ’60s? That would essentially mean that the movies would feature only Blake, Krystle and Alexis from the show (every other character would be a child or not even born yet). And what would they be about? How would you market these films to a young audience? I just don’t see it.
