Reboots Are Spider-Man and Superman's New Foes

I don’t like the word “reboot”. It used to have a certain charm to it, but nowadays every old movie franchise is being “rebooted” with mostly annoying results. I have written earlier about my disappointment at the decisions to not merely follow in the footsteps of Sam Raimi and Bryan Singer with the Spider-Man and Superman franchises, but starting over altogether. Raimi delivered three Spider-Man movies, only one of which was below par (but not by much); Singer one Superman that was perfectly in tone with the predecessors.

We don’t know what Zack Snyder aims to do with the Superman concept. Henry Cavill has been cast as the superhero, but the decision to rely on a script by David S. Goyer is not necessarily a good thing just because the Batman reboot worked to perfection. Superman is a heroic symbol in our world, not a dark, brooding, troubled crime-fighter in the vein of Batman. Will Goyer be able to handle these new sentiments? One thing is certain – we do not want to see the Superman myth told from the beginning once again.

The same goes for Spider-Man, but we don’t seem to be in luck. Martin Sheen has been cast as Ben Parker in Marc Webb’s reboot and we all know that Ben needs to die… which of course was a key ingredient in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man just a few years ago. Been there, done that. What happens to Spider-Man years after his adolescent discovery of his gift is what we want to know.

In the words of Will Arnett in Arrested Development – come on! Marc Webb and Zack Snyder – seize the opportunity to do something different. If “reboot” means tracing origins or ignoring the soul of the character, forget about it.

The YouTube clip above shows the first pic of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man… which offered no surprises.
