Thank God for a New Die Hard

These are times when 300 is what gets people excited. Those who read my review of it know I have problems with it. I never felt genuinely involved in what took place and the single thing that impressed me was knowing that the filmmakers shot it all in a studio in Montreal. Watching the actors move around in surroundings that are Sparta, albeit very stylized, is a grand technical achievement. But as a film, the whole thing gets tiresome. Later this year, Michael Bay will give us the first live-action version of Transformers. I’m sure it will kill at the box office, but the question is if he’s learned how to tell a story in a compelling way. That hasn’t happened yet.

So, forgive me for getting nostalgic. The news of a fourth chapter in the Die Hard series made me happy, and now that the first full trailer has arrived for Live Free or Die Hard ( Die Hard 4.0 to anyone outside of the U.S.) I am yet to be disappointed. Things blow up, there are amazing action sequences involving cars and helicopters, Kevin Smith will provide a sense of humor and Bruce Willis looks just as rugged as John McClane is supposed to. Original? Hell, no. A thrillride nevertheless? Let’s hope and pray.
