Van Helsing
The one name they all fear.
In 1889, Gabriel Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) goes to Transylvania to help Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale), the last in her family, fight Dracula. This adventure flick tosses in every movie monster known to man but it’s not as fun as it must have looked on paper. The jokes are very predictable, there’s no blood in the actors and the fights pile up without generating much excitement. The film does however feature an amusing encounter with Mr. Hyde in Paris and the opening sequence is a dynamic salute to none other than James Whale.
2004-U.S. 130 min. Color. Directed by Stephen Sommers. Cinematography: Allen Daviau. Production Design: Allan Cameron. Cast: Hugh Jackman (Gabriel Van Helsing), Kate Beckinsale (Anna Valerious), Richard Roxburgh (Vladislaus Dracula), David Wenham, Shuler Hensley, Elena Anaya… Robbie Coltrane.
Trivia: The story was allegedly intended for a sequel to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).
