Horse Feathers

The maddest comics of the screen!

The Marx Brothers’ third film with an animal in the title is so out of control that I can barely tell you the plot; suffice it to say that it takes place in a university, Groucho is the unlikely president, Chico and Harpo his bumbling assistants and the whole thing ends with a football game that’s wilder than usual. Lots of slapstick and funny oneliners; not all of it works, but most does. The movie has a great opening with Groucho giving a speech to the students and topping it off with a hilarious showstopper; there are other memorable music acts. Ms. Todd is very amusing as Zeppo’s girlfriend.

1932-U.S. 70 min. B/W. Produced by Herman J. Mankiewicz. Directed by Norman Z. McLeod. Cast: Groucho Marx (Quincy Adams Wagstaff), Harpo Marx (Pinky), Chico Marx (Baravelli), Zeppo Marx (Frank Wagstaff), Thelma Todd, David Landau.

Quote: “You have the brain of a four-year-old child, and I’ll bet he was glad to get rid of it.” (Groucho Marx)
