The American President

Why can’t the most powerful man in the world have the thing he wants most?

Widowed President Andrew Shepherd (Douglas) falls for environmental lobbyist Bening, but dating has political consequences for a man in his position. Another charming romantic comedy for Mr. Reiner, greatly aided by Mr. Sorkin’s idealistic, highly political but also amusing script; the writer’s fans will recognize the walk-and-talk sequences, the witty dialogue and his attention to detail in the depiction of the presidency. Mr. Douglas is solid as the Democratic president and Ms. Bening is perfectly cast as the confused love interest; terrific supporting players. No big laughs, but engrossing and quite romantic.

1995-U.S. 115 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced and directed by Rob Reiner. Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin. Music: Marc Shaiman. Cast: Michael Douglas (Andrew Shepherd), Annette Bening (Sydney Ellen Wade), Martin Sheen (A.J. MacInerney), Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith, John Mahoney… Richard Dreyfuss.

Aaron Sorkin: “For both of the movies I wrote for Rob Reiner, A Few Good Men and The American President, I spent the first few months of the writing process climbing the walls and trying to figure out in my head what it was Rob wanted. Finally, the deadline would come up in my face, and I had to start writing something. So I wrote what I wanted to write and then realized that’s what Rob wanted. He wanted me. He just wanted me to write.” (Interview on WritersDigest.com)

Trivia: The replica of the Oval Office has also been used in Dave (1993) and The West Wing (1999-2006).

Very charming and entertaining film, with Sorkin’s trademark political idealism. If only it was as easy in real life…
