Jumper
Anywhere. Anything. Instantly.
At the age of 15, David Rice discovers that he has the supernatural ability to transport himself from one place to another within seconds. The concept tickles the imagination, but the filmmakers are unable to deliver. Those who are “jumpers” don’t do much with their powers apart from visiting landmarks all over the world. They’re hunted by a mysterious group of people who want to kill them. The reason remains obscure and that lack of satisfaction mars most ingredients. Still, entertaining on a superficial level.
2008-U.S. 90 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Doug Liman. Cast: Hayden Christensen (David Rice), Samuel L. Jackson (Roland), Rachel Bilson (Millie), Jamie Bell, Diane Lane, Michael Rooker… Tom Hulce.
► Doug Liman: “There is something very honest and lovable about David Rice. It was one of the reasons why I knew I should make this movie and not someone else. Because I knew if I made this film, I would not feel the compulsion to make him a hero. The generic Hollywood version of this film writes itself. It is screenwriting 101. A selfish hero comes across a destructive villain and then changes in order to save the world. We’ve seen that a thousand times before. I thought, ‘What if we had a selfish superhero that doesn’t care about anyone else and he wants to save his own ass. He uses his power for himself.’ And we love that.” (Interview on MovieWeb.com)
