The Gulf War, 1991. No story is worth dying for – but this was the story of a lifetime.
In 1990, CNN (then a fledgling cable news network) sends two producers (Michael Keaton, Helena Bonham Carter) to Baghdad to cover what was to turn into an upcoming war between Iraq and the U.S. The story of how CNN made the Gulf War into its own coming-out party is depicted in somewhat rosy colors by HBO; both networks are after all owned by Time Warner. Still, it’s a pacy portrayal of the circumstances under which journalists worked in Iraq, and the visual effects during the first attack on Baghdad are convincing. The two stars give engaging performances.
