The Legend of Zorro

This fall, adventure begins with a Z.

California is about to attain statehood, but it is threatened by evil powers and needs help from Zorro (Antonio Banderas)… who has marital problems. The sequel to The Mask of Zorro (1998) reunites the two stars with director Martin Campbell; time has passed, Zorro and his wife now have a kid, but the fun and the freshness of the original is gone. Everybody do their best; Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones look like they have fun, and there’s nothing wrong with the swashbuckling… but the film is overlong and uninspired.

2005-U.S. 130 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Martin Campbell. Cast: Antonio Banderas (Alejandro de la Vega/Zorro), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Elena de la Vega), Rufus Sewell (Armand), Nick Chinlund, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Shuler Hensley.

Trivia: Steven Spielberg and Robert Rodriguez were allegedly considered for directing duties; Mr. Spielberg co-executive produced the film.
