Pocahontas

Two different worlds. One true love.

With this film, Disney discarded all the old fairy tales and chose to dramatize an historical event, the story of how John Smith met and fell in love with Pocahontas, the daughter of an Indian chief, in the New World. This Disneyfication of history was heavily criticized (and no one should mistake the film for a history lesson), but if you ignore that you will find a beautifully animated (purple, blue and green are primary colors), reasonably entertaining love story with great music. Many kids in the audience will however find portions of the film dull, and the lead characters aren’t all that memorable.

1995-U.S. Animated. 82 min. Color. Directed by Mike Gabriel, Eric Goldberg. Music: Alan Menken. Songs: “Colors of the Wind”, “Mine, Mine, Mine” (Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz). Voices of Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas (singing voice)), Mel Gibson (John Smith), David Ogden Stiers, John Kassir, Russell Means… Christian Bale, Linda Hunt, Billy Connolly.

Trivia: John Candy was allegedly considered for a role as a sidekick, but the character was dropped after Candy’s death in 1994. Followed by a video sequel, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998).

Oscars: Best Original Score, Original Song (“Colors of the Wind”). Golden Globe: Best Original Song (“Colors of the Wind”).
