Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Saving the world is a hell of a job.

Hellboy (Ron Perlman) ends up in the middle of an epic battle between humans and mythical creatures; an exiled prince wishes to wreak havoc with the aid of the dormant Golden Army. This sequel is like director Guillermo del Toro found the ultimate excuse to stuff a movie full of all kinds of crazy creatures. It’s like spending two hours at the Mos Eisley Cantina – entertaining, but a bit much. The intellectual part of the script addresses Hellboy’s problems with adapting to a world where he’s constantly seen as a freak show, as well as his journey to becoming a mature presence in Liz’s life. A few breathtaking action scenes, an engaging story, but perhaps not as funny as it would like to be.

2008-U.S. 120 min. Color. Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. Cast: Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz Sherman), Doug Jones (Abe Sapian/The Chamberlain/Angel of Death), James Dodd, Jeffrey Tambor, Luke Goss… John Hurt.

Trivia: Family Guy creator and voice talent Seth McFarlane provides the voice of Johann Krauss. Christopher Lee was allegedly considered for a part.
