Battle for the Planet of the Apes

The final chapter in the incredible apes saga. The most suspenseful showdown ever filmed as two civilizations battle for the right to inherit what’s left of the Earth!

The fifth and concluding chapter in the Planet of the Apes series presents apes as eloquent and bright as the ones in the first movie, a gigantic leap from the “pets” seen in opus 4. That part defies logic, but not that many will care and the story has come full circle. The film portrays a kind of definitive battle between the apes and the humans, as fascist gorillas are planning to seize power from ape leader Caesar (Roddy McDowall). But all that’s left is a disturbing feeling of déjà vu.

1973-U.S. 92 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by J. Lee Thompson. Cast: Roddy McDowall (Caesar), Natalie Trundy (Lisa), Severn Darden (Kolp), Paul Williams, Claude Akins, John Huston.

One and a half stars
