The Mummy
The sands will rise. The heavens will part. The power will be unleashed.
In 1932, a resurrected mummy went searching for a lady in modern-day society; 70 years later a new undead is wreaking havoc, now with computer-animated powers. The filmmakers updated the mummy legend as a silly Raiders of the Lost Ark wannabe, with 1920’s adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) stumbling onto the evil and quite dead Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). Too much time passes before we even get to see the mummy and the bad jokes and empty characters hurt the movie, but the visual effects and Fraser compensate.
1999-U.S. 125 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Stephen Sommers. Cast: Brendan Fraser (Rick O’Connell), Rachel Weisz (Evelyn Carnahan), John Hannah (Jonathan Carnahan), Arnold Vosloo (Imhotep), Kevin J. O’Connor, Jonathan Hyde.
Trivia: Clive Barker, Joe Dante and George A. Romero were allegedly considered for directing duties. Followed by two sequels, starting with The Mummy Returns (2001).
