Daybreakers

In 2019, the world is ruled by vampires and humans have become a near-extinct race; the lack of blood has researcher Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) working on a surrogate. Michael and Peter Spierig enjoy collaborating with zombies and vampires; their last film is called Undead (2003). They’ve done a good job with this one, breathing (somewhat) new air into a tired concept. Perhaps it can be explained by Hawke’s presence, but the script also has faint echoes of Gattaca (1997). Silly at times, but with a good sense of humor (love the vampiric “batmobile”) and a few exciting, nicely designed horror scenes.

2010-U.S.-Australia. 98 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by The Spierig Brothers. Cast: Ethan Hawke (Edward Dalton), Willem Dafoe (Lionel Cormac), Claudia Karvan (Audrey Bennett), Sam Neill, Michael Dorman, Isabel Lucas.
