Edge of Darkness

Some secrets take us to the edge.

When Boston detective Thomas Craven’s (Mel Gibson) daughter (Bojana Novakovic) is brutally murdered on his doorstep, he finds clues that lead to a powerful energy company. Director Martin Campbell also made the 1985 British miniseries that inspired this violent but emotional thriller. It’s a good transition that effectively tries to soften the negative impact of the predictable Big Evil Corporation story. Somewhat uneven, the movie nevertheless delivers compelling moments along the way. The cast is first-rate, including Gibson in his first starring role in eight years as a lonely, grizzled and grieving cop.

2010-U.S. 117 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Martin Campbell. Screenplay: William Monahan, Andrew Bovell. Cast: Mel Gibson (Thomas Craven), Ray Winstone (Jedburgh), Danny Huston (Jack Bennett), Bojana Novakovic, Shawn Roberts, Jay O. Sanders.

Trivia: Robert De Niro was first cast as Jedburgh, but dropped out.
