Is it a crime of passion, or an act of treason?
Navy officer Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) is posted at the Pentagon where he starts having an affair with Susan Atwell (Sean Young)… who turns out to be the Secretary of Defense’s (Gene Hackman) mistress. This remake of The Big Clock (1948) ups the ante by moving the story to the corridors of (considerable) power. The last hour of the film has many nail-biting moments as our hero tries everything to keep himself out of a conspiracy that could falsely implicate him. Costner is a terrific every-day hero and Will Patton is memorable as the Secretary’s sleazy assistant. The sexy scene in a limo has become a minor classic, but the final sequence looks like an alternative ending that should have been rejected.
