Spaceballs
May The Schwartz Be With You.
Mercenary Pullman tries to stop an evil empire from stealing the air supply from a lush planet. This spoof of space movies really felt like it came a decade too late. Best part of it is the enthusiasm on display. Mr. Moranis is way over the top, but the nerdy Darth Vader double (with a huge helmet) is undoubtedly his funniest part ever. Director Brooks himself is of course the right man to play a very Jewish Yoda. There are times when you’re willing to laugh at the jokes, but the movie is just too silly.
1987-U.S. 95 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Mel Brooks, Ezra Swerdlow. Directed by Mel Brooks. Cast: Mel Brooks (Yogurt/Scroob), John Candy (Barf), Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet), Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten… John Hurt. Voices of Joan Rivers, Dom DeLuise.

This has got to be Mel Brooks’ funniest movie since Blazing Saddles. The late, great John Candy is especially hilarious as Barf, an obvious spoof of Chewbacca from the original Star Wars films. This is comedy the way it was meant to be.
