Beyond the Poseidon Adventure

Terror beyond imagination.

Two salvage parties, one led by Mike Turner (Michael Caine), the other by Stefan Svevo (Telly Savalas), arrive at the site of the now flipped-over luxury liner Poseidon. The sequel to The Poseidon Adventure (1972) is a dull afterthought that almost looks like a parody of Irwin Allen’s earlier disaster movies, with unconvincing sets and uninspired dangers. The cast is full of familiar faces, but they play stock characters that are dull at best; Sally Field and Peter Boyle compete as to who is the most annoying.

1979-U.S. 122 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced and directed by Irwin Allen. Cast: Michael Caine (Mike Turner), Sally Field (Celeste Whitman), Telly Savalas (Stefan Svevo), Peter Boyle, Jack Warden, Shirley Knight… Slim Pickens, Shirley Jones, Karl Malden, Mark Harmon.

One and a half stars
