The 1980s TV hit was updated for a post-9/11 audience, introducing elements of social criticism in its portrayal of how the arrival of huge spaceships affected people in the world’s major cities. The show focused on a group of humans who realized that the visitors had sinister plans, including an FBI agent (Elizabeth Mitchell) whose teenage son (Logan Huffman) was an easy target for the charismatic aliens. Morena Baccarin was quite effective as Anna, the beautiful, evil leader of the visitors, and the show boasted good effects. But there was nevertheless a lack of direction; the showrunners had little confidence and the stories were alternately serious and silly, trying to please everyone in the audience. Not even Jane Badler’s comeback as a new kind of Diana lived up to its promise.
