The Rum Diary
Absolutely nothing in moderation.
In 1960, hard-partying reporter Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) goes to Puerto Rico to work for the local newspaper and gets involved with a wealthy American’s (Aaron Eckhart) shady business dealings. Bruce Robinson’s first film in two decades allows us to view the exploitation of the island nation through the boozy, drug-addled eyes of a journalist who appears to not give a damn. Well cast, and when the story begins to drag there’s always pleasant period details to enjoy. An improvement on another Hunter S. Thompson filmization starring Depp, the dreary Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).
2011-U.S. 120 min. Color. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson. Novel: Hunter S. Thompson. Cast: Johnny Depp (Paul Kemp), Aaron Eckhart (Hal Sanderson), Michael Rispoli (Bob Sala), Amber Heard, Richard Jenkins, Giovanni Ribisi.
Trivia: Benicio Del Toro and Nick Nolte were allegedly considered for roles.
