Resident Evil

A secret experiment. A deadly virus. A fatal mistake.

A virus has been released inside The Hive, a secret underground facility, turning the lab workers into zombies; a military task force is deployed to take care of the problem. The following battle against a superintelligent computer that controls The Hive is run-of-the-mill, but this adaptation of the video game is actually not bad. Director Paul Anderson keeps the movie going, the zombies are fun to watch and the action is fairly well made. There’s nothing new here though, and the CGI monster is just dull.

2002-U.S.-Germany-France. 100 min. Color. Written and directed by Paul Anderson. Cast: Milla Jovovich (Alice), Michelle Rodriguez (Rain Ocampo), Eric Mabius (Matt Addison), James Purefoy, Colin Salmon, Martin Crewes. Cameo: Jason Isaacs.

Trivia: George A. Romero was allegedly the first choice as director. Followed by two sequels, starting with Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004).

Two stars
