Director Soderbergh and his buddies obviously felt that the best way to spend a vacation would be remaking an old “Rat Pack” movie. This version, an improvement on the original, still carries the burden of a pretty tedious screenplay, but at least the filmmakers do their best to offset it. Mr. Clooney and the rest of the cast are well chosen as the robbers who intend to hit Garcia’s three Vegas casinos. The film is fun, but the most important thing is the director’s sense of style. The choice of music, the cinematography, the editing—the whole thing is elegant, but perhaps with a touch of Vegas vulgarity.
2001-U.S. 115 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Steven Soderbergh. Cast: George Clooney (Danny Ocean), Matt Damon (Linus Caldwell), Andy Garcia (Terry Benedict), Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck… Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner. Cameos: Don Cheadle, Angie Dickinson.
Trivia: Bruce Willis was allegedly set to appear in the film, but had to drop out. Followed by two sequels, starting with Ocean’s Twelve (2004).
