Soylent Green
It’s the Year 2022… People Are Still the Same. They’ll Do Anything to Get What They Need. And They Need Soylent Green.
New York, 2022. Cop Heston investigates the murder of a wealthy businessman who was involved with the Soylent corporation, which manufactures a mysterious food called Soylent Green. This dystopia portrays a possible future where all natural resources have been emptied, but the technical aspects are not believable at all (it doesn’t get more advanced than pay phones). As a thriller, it’s pretty dreary, although the grisly “surprise” at the end is a classic. Mr. Robinson is great in his final role.
1973-U.S. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Richard Fleischer. Novel: Harry Harrison (“Make Room! Make Room!”). Cast: Charlton Heston (Robert Thorn), Edward G. Robinson (Sol Roth), Leigh Taylor-Young (Shirl), Chuck Connors, Joseph Cotten, Brock Peters… Dick Van Patten.
