Keeper of the Flame
An admired American patriot dies in an accident and reporter Tracy plans to write a book about him. But the closer he gets to the man’s wife, the closer he gets to the truth. Mr. Cukor’s film starts out like Citizen Kane (1941), takes a wartime look at the meaning of patriotism and ends up telling us that even heroes have dark secrets in their lives. The script has a few silly ingredients, but this is nevertheless a very entertaining film. It was Tracy-Hepburn’s second together; she is excellent as the widow who ended up making a painful decision.
1943-U.S. 100 min. B/W. Directed by George Cukor. Cast: Spencer Tracy (Steven O’Malley), Katharine Hepburn (Christine Forrest), Richard Whorf (Clive Kerndon), Margaret Wycherly, Forrest Tucker, Frank Craven.
