Comandante
I guess Oliver Stone was hoping to ignite a real discussion on Fidel Castro and the four-decade-long U.S. trade embargo with this documentary, his first, but the approach is wrongheaded. His team went to Havana and spent several days with the 75-year-old President who talks about the 1959 revolution, his relationship with the U.S., the women in his life, what movies he has seen, and so on. Stone has shot and edited the film the same way he did JFK (1991), which makes it a lively experience… but he does create a propaganda piece for a dictator, and that leaves a bad aftertaste.
2003-U.S. 99 min. Color. Produced by Oliver Stone, Fernando Sulichin. Directed by Oliver Stone. Featuring: Fidel Castro, Oliver Stone.
Trivia: Followed by a made-for-TV documentary, Looking for Fidel (2004).
