Exorcist II: The Heretic

It’s four years later… What does she remember?

Father Philip Lamont (Richard Burton) starts investigating what happened to Father Merrin (Max von Sydow); Regan (Linda Blair) survived his exorcism, but the demon remains inside of her. This sequel ignores the fact that the girl did lose the demon in the original film. Whatever. Out of the notoriously disastrous shoot comes a film with poor writing, long, boring therapy sessions, a hysterical, absurd finale in Regan’s bedroom, and anemic acting from both Blair and Burton.

1977-U.S. 110 min. Color. Directed by John Boorman. Cast: Richard Burton (Philip Lamont), Linda Blair (Regan MacNeil), Louise Fletcher (Gene Tuskin), Kitty Winn, James Earl Jones, Ned Beatty… Max von Sydow.

Trivia: John Boorman re-edited the film the day after its premiere. Jon Voight and Jack Nicholson were allegedly considered for the part of Lamont. Followed by The Exorcist III (1990).
