In Love and War
In war they found each other… In each other they found love…
It’s a pity that director Attenborough can’t bring life to the story of how young, wounded ambulance driver Ernest Hemingway met nurse Agnes in Italy during WWI. “A Farewell to Arms” is a true literary classic, but the filmmakers manage to make the events that inspired the author look pretty tepid. The dull Bullock-O’Donnell matching is another drawback and the pretty Italian scenery is not enough to induce a sense of romance.
1996-U.S.-Britain. 115 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Richard Attenborough. Cast: Sandra Bullock (Agnes Von Kurowsky), Chris O’Donnell (Ernest Hemingway), Mackenzie Astin (Henry Villard), Emilio Bonucci, Ingrid Lacey, Margot Steinberg.
